Mavis Tsai, Ph.D., and Robert Kohlenberg, Ph.D., ABPP, “Introduction to Functional Analytic Psycho
Drs. Kohlenberg and Dr. Tsai are the originators of Functional Analytic Therapy-- Tsai, M., Kohlenberg, R.J., Kanter, J., Kohlenberg, B., Follette, W., & Callaghan, G. (2008). A guide to functional analytic psychotherapy: Awareness, courage, love and behaviorism. New York: Springer, and Kohlenberg, R. J. & Tsai, M. (1991). Functional Analytic Psychotherapy: A guide for creating intense and curative therapeutic relationships.  New York: Plenum.
FAP is based on the behavior analytic, or functional contextualistic, approach to human behavior first described by B. F. Skinner. However, the treatment is not mechanistic; in fact, FAP results in psychotherapy relationships that are usually more intense and personal than is typically found in cognitive-behavioral treatments.
FAP is based on a behavioral analysis of the therapeutic relationship. It has been developed to be used together with traditional behavioral approaches or when the focus of intervention is on patient’s abilities in interpersonal relationships.
